The admin is that part of a company that is made up of administration and support personnel’s who are not facing the client. Back–office functions include settlements, clearances, record maintenance, regulatory compliance, accounting, and IT services. The key responsibility of them is to provide assistance to the front desk staff in their daily endeavors. They need to co-ordinate with the sales or the marketing team for daily reports and maintain them at their end.
The common perception of people is that the sales team is more important than the admin as it gets all the business, though this is a myth. The colleagues in accounting, IT, marketing, admin/operations support and HR are all equally important. They can have such an impact on the wider business that its value should never be belittled. A well functioning back-office is an asset to the organization. They provide the required documentation and technical support to the front office to facilitate the course of work and the business transactions.
The skill sets required for this division is human resources, processing, accounting or data entry. Though there are times when they take care of the internal processes of a venture.
They are not in the front domain of the business but undoubtedly they are major contributors to a business. The success of a business lies a lot on the shoulders of the back-office people.
The back offices are not necessarily located in the same office as the headquarters. They might have been allocated another location to cut rental cost.
The newfound way to open back offices is to outsource one’s business back-office work to a consultant or a business outsourcing unit outside the country for cost-cutting.
There are companies which provide excellent services for back office in other countries and they turn out to be cheaper and effective for the organization hiring them.
One of the most important tasks of a back office employee is to be updated with all the new software’s that minimize the time and also yield effective results in data storage.
The back office employees have to keep updating themselves with new technologies and software’s to help the company grow faster.
Like every other department in an organization, the back office employees should also be audited, their appraisal and evaluation should also happen for them to perform better. Every employee’s pursuance depends on the level of recognition he gets from his company and for that there have to be set parameters to be able to judge them on a nonbiased way.
Last but not the least for people who are trying to decide if they fit in the front office or the back-office. Give it a thought and if possible work both the departments. The back office is slightly more relaxed environment whereas the front office if right in the line of attack.
